In the past, I have written about how the new color systems are sharing time with fixed color filter systems. In the past we would just pick up a swatchbook and flip through it to compare colors. With the advent of color mixing scrollers and RGB LED fixtures, we can now use a color picker feature that is available on many dimmer control boards being manufactured presently. The ever popular iPhone has many color mixing apps available to help the designer find their colors. As I was surfing around with my iPad, I ran across an interesting training tool that designers and programmers can use to train their “eye/brain coordination”. The app is called ArrGeeBee and is available for both iPhone and iPad. It is listed in the Games category. How it works is you are given a target color to match and three faders controlling red, green, and blue intensities. By playing with the faders you match the color against a timer. There are 3 levels and the highest level is very difficult. It is a great tool to train a designer to look at a color and analyze what RGB components make up that color. Yes, it seems tedious but that is the way entertainment lighting seems to be going. After playing with the game for awhile, I realized that I am NOT an expert on color mixing despite 30 years of mixing RGBA cyc washes. Download this free app and train those eyes!
